Brooke Manor, Totteridge, North London
Categories: Architecture, Interiors, Town Planning, Landscape
Location: Totteridge
Status: On Site, due for completion spring 2013
Project Value: 3.5m
Located within a beautiful conservation area in north London, the original building on this site was demolished due to subsidence, poor environmental performance and structural issues. The brief was to replace the house with an environmentally friendly family dwelling that sits well within the character of the area whilst displaying high quality contemporary design and workmanship.
Once completed, this detached house will provide high-end contemporary living and entertaining spaces set within extensive gardens. Careful consideration was given to relate the interior spaces to the outside, which was achieved by using extensive floor-to-ceiling glass panes in all garden-facing living rooms.
The inside of the house will be filled with light, energy and character, whilst the front facade has been designed to sit modestly and calmly within the surrounding area. Materials and all architectural elements were carefully chosen to achieve a modest, yet strikingly beautiful exterior.
The house is designed to be fully accessible with a level entrance and a lift connecting all levels. The lower ground floor, which opens onto to the large family garden, has been designed for modern entertaining in the grand style, and has the potential to accommodate staff living accommodation, a media room and a gymnasium. The ground floor, with its large green terrace area, has been well connected to the garden and contains all the day to day family living spaces, including the family kitchen and dining rooms and the informal and formal living spaces. All of the 6 en-suite bedrooms are on the first and second floor.
Maison Le Lavandou, Provence, France
Categories: Architecture, Interiors
Location: Lavandou, France
Status: Planning Application
Project Value: £75,000
Situated on the hillside of the provence and overlooking the bays os St. Clair and LeLavandou, this property benefits from outstanding views. The client wanted an extension to the garden side of the existing accomodation, without compromising on light and the views from the living room. The new room was to serve as a sitting and breakfast room during the winter months, and convert into a shaded patio during the summer.
The use of glass was an obvious choice but carefull consideration had to be given to avoid overheating during the majority of the year.
The solution was the extensive use of sun louvers which double as rain shelter during the summer months. During the summer, the glass roof and front panels are open and hidden away allowing for natural ventilation, whilst during the colder months the glass panels of the extensions close to provide rainshelter, with the additional benefit of heat gains. Throughout the year, the house retains the fantastic views over the bays and harbour.
Residential Extention, Tower Hamlets, London
Categories: Architecture, Town Planning
Location: Tower Hamlets, London
Status: Planning Application
Project Value: £60,000
The existing residential property on this site was a traditional live / work unit which boasted many original features. The house was previously altered and one of the workshops to the rear had been demolished to make space for a garden.
The client wanted to extend the property back into the garden space, and re-introduce greenery in the form of intensive green roof coverings. The brief was to create a seperate studio to the rear of the property which could be accessed and used independently of the main house. The studio was to be seperated from the main house by a small japanese inspired courtyard, and great care had to be taken to ensure that privacy was granted to both the main house occupants and the garden studio occupants.
The solution was found in a range of semi-transparent materials, the use of adjustable sun-louvers, clever positioning of windows and openings as well as a layout that generally disallowed views into the studio space from the mainhouse.

Residential Extension, Hackney, London
Categories: Architecture, Town Planning
Location: Hackney
Status: Plannning Application
Project Value: £60,000
Heckmann Design was approach to provice town planning advice and architectural design services for this project. The client wanted to enlarge the existing single and 2-storey rear extension and to create a 2-storey infill to north side alleyway at the above- mentioned property. The proposed extension allowed for the creation of an additional small bedroom, a downstairs toilet and an enlarged kitchen/dining area, making the property more suitable for family occupation.
The front of the side extension was designed to be sympathetic to the existing streetscape and was to be of materials similar to those used in the main part of the building. The side extension would be slightly set back and as such would mirror the extension of the neighbouring dwelling. The enlargement of the rear extension would consist of materials and finishes similar to those already present in the main building.

Categories: Architecture, Town Planning
Location: Irvine, Ayrshire
Status: Planning
Project Value: £150,000
Located in a residential area, the unit previously housed a newsagent but has since fallen into disrepair. Situated on an island surrounded by low traffic streets, the newsagent previously benefited from a good level of exposure, but retail competition had made the unit become commercially unviable.
The client approached Heckmann Design to come up with a solution that would allow the unit to be converted into a residential property. The small footprint and the high level of exposure of the site were some of the challenges that had to be overcome.

Jelly Piece Square, Hyndland, Glasgow
Categories: Urban Design
Location: Glasgow
Status: Competition
Project Value: £700,000
The site is located within the West End of Glasgow. It extends to approximately 0.3 hectares and is currently used as a car park.
Due to the sites proximity to the university and the busy west end retail centre, the site is ideally located for a public square which is currently missing in the area. It was therefore proposed to remove the car parks within the site and re-use the gained area as a public event space with suitable seating areas.
The development of the site into a public square complied with the adopted local plan, which designates the site as a housing district and as such local greenspaces, community and recreational uses are encouraged. As the site lies within a conservation area, the proposal aims at maintaining the integrity of the entire area and enhance its special character. A public square does not impact onto the areas historic context in volume, scale and form, but matches or surpasses the surrounding area in terms of materials and quality.
